Done deal – Celtic defender agrees exit after paperwork finalised
Scottish Championship side Dundee United have confirmed that they have signed Celtic defender Sam Wardrop on a two-year-deal.
The news was announced on their official Twitter page on Thursday afternoon and confirmed on the Celtic Twitter page.
The 20-year-old came up the youth ranks at Celtic but didn’t play a senior competitive game for the club.
He spent the last season out on loan at Championship club Dumbarton where he made 27 appearances in all competitions.
Dundee United manager Csaba László said: “Sam is an athletic and energetic defender who likes to get forward and attack the opposition. I am pleased that we have secured his signing.
“We must build a squad capable of winning the Ladbrokes Championship, and he will be an important part of the squad next season.”
Football Insider verdict:
Sam Wardrop impressed at Dumbarton, despite the club finishing bottom but one of the Championship. He’s been rewarded with a move further up the table – Dundee United finished third in the table, 13 points behind title winners St Mirren, and he’ll be looking to help his new side to promotion next season and show Celtic they’ve made a mistake letting him go. It’s a good move for Wardrop, who should be able to command regular first-team football and get his career – that had stalled at Celtic – back on track. Bar a pre-season friendly again Lyon last July, Wardop hadn’t featured in the Celtic first-team and was unlikely to make an impact this season under Brendan Rodgers. It will be a disappointment to Wardrop that he didn’t make the grade at the Scottish champions, but it’s no disgrace to fail to make it into the best Scottish team by far at the present time. Now it’s up to him to prove that he belongs back at Scotland’s top table.
