Done deal: Everton agree terms with defender

By Danny Wright

Everton have confirmed that Phil Jagielka has penned a one-year contract extension which keep hims at Goodison Park until the summer of 2019.

The Toffees announced on their official Twitter account on Wednesday evening that the 34-year-old had agreed terms to extend his stay as he was currently in the final year of his existing deal.

Jagielka was signed by Everton from Sheffield United for £4million in 2007 and his latest deal means that he will be spending 12 years at Goodison Park.

The defender has earned 349 appearances across all competitions for the Merseyside club, scoring 17 goals in the process.

He was part of the Toffees side that reached the FA Cup final in 2009 where he saw his side lose 2-1 to Chelsea and has also been named as his club’s player of the year on two occasions.

Ronald Koeman has made considerable additions to his side this summer, but it still appears that Jagielka has a place in his plans despite the arrival of Michael Keane from Burnley.

Football Insider Verdict

Jagielka is without doubt one of the more popular members of the Everton squad and he will no doubt go down as a modern day hero when his spell at Goodison Park finally comes to an end. The 40-times England international seems like he still has a role to play in Koeman’s first-team plans next season despite it looking like Ashley Williams and Keane are set to start in the Premier League season opener against Stoke on Merseyside next weekend. Ramrio Funes Mori is out injured for a long time so it’s Koeman’s options are spread thin in that area. Jagielka showed towards the back end of last season that he is more than capable of stepping in when injuries plague the squad.
