Done deal: Forward signs after Everton agree terms

By Derek Smithson

Everton have sold forward Courtney Duffus to Oldham Athletic on a permanent basis, it was announced on Monday evening.

The Toffees confirmed on their official website that the 21-year-old has completed a switch to the League One club for an undisclosed fee.

The Ireland Under-21 international has signed a two-year deal with Oldham and has ended his five-year association with Everton.

Duffus moved to Goodison Park back in 2012 from Cheltenham Town and became an important player in Everton’s youth teams.

He won both the Under-18s Premier League in 2014 and the Premier League 2 title in 2017 in David Unsworth’s talented group of players.

The striker failed to make a single senior appearances for the Merseyside club and has been unable to force his way into contention under Ronald Koeman.

The youngster will now hope to experience regular football at senior level and continue his development.

Everton still have a talented crop of youngsters breaking into their first team and Duffus has ended up falling just short of the requirements.

Football Insider verdict:

Koeman has shown a great willingness to promote youngsters already at Everton and Duffus’ exit is no bad reflection. The 21-year-old was a part of a successful youth side and will now get the chance to prove himself elsewhere in the Football League. The Toffees should continue to give younger players a chance such as Tom Davies, Ademola Lookman and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. However, they have made some senior signings in the summer and the likes of Wayne Rooney, Jordan Pickford and Davvy Klaassen should help them compete at the top-end of the Premier League table. Koeman will keep persisting with his youngsters and the amount of matches such allow for rotation.

In other Everton transfer news, they are in a three-way battle to sign a Premier League forward.
