Done deal: Forward signs after Rangers agree terms

By Harvey Byrne

Rangers confirmed on Sunday afternoon that they have signed wide forward Daniel Candeias on a two-year deal.

A statement on the Gers’ official website announced that a deal had been done between the Ibrox giants and the 29-year-old after the player and club agreed terms.

He is the fifth player to join Pedro Caixinha’s team this summer following the signings of Fabio Cadroso, Ryan Jack, Bruno Alves and Dalcio, while he is also the fourth Portuguese national to join the club so far this window.

Both Candeias and Caixinha have also previously worked in Portugal at Nacional and it was the form of the right-winger there which prompted European giants Benfica into signing him in 2014.

The former Portugal Under-21 international had a tough time at Benfica, failing to make a single appearance for the club.

However, he has enjoyed first team football with each of FC Nurnberg, Granada, Metz and Alanyaspor across four loan deals.

Candeias’ most recent loan in Turkey saw him contribute four goals and four assists in 29 league appearances for Alanyaspor and he will now be hoping for a better return in Scotland.

Football Insider verdict:

Caixinha is clearly putting his faith in players that he knows well this summer and Rangers fans will be hoping that the manager can be trusted in his first window at the club. Additionally, the Gers support will know that their squad needs beefing up for next season’s Europa League campaign and while a right midfielder was a necessity this summer they will also be happy to see the depth of the squad added to further. Players suchas Dalcio, Cardoso and Candeias are unknown quantities to those in the Uniter Kingdom, but they are certainly names that will get fans excited, rather than those who joined from the likes of Accrington and Preston last summer.

In other Rangers transfer news, Caixinha is in regular contact with this goalscoring midfielder.
