Confirmed: 25-year-old agrees Celtic exit
By Danny Wright
Dundee confirmed on Wednesday that they have signed Celtic midfielder Scott Allan on a season-long loan.
A statement on the Dees’ official club website confirmed that they “have beaten off competition” to sign the 25-year-old, as well as Sutton United’s Roarie Deacon on a two-year permanent deal.
Allan was signed by Celtic in 2015 after spending a year with Hibernian, but has only made 17 senior first-team appearances in the green and white hoops.
He spent last season on loan with Rotherham in the English Championship, but only made 11 appearances across all competitions as they were relegated.
Despite that poor experience out on loan, he is still willing to exit Celtic once more after agreeing a fresh deal with Dundee.
Controversially, Allan began his career with the Dees’ bitter local rivals Dundee United before moving to West Brom in 2012.
He didn’t play a single first-team match with the Baggies and endured four loan spells with Milton Keynes, Birmingham and Portsmouth twice.
Allan was released and snapped up by Hibs in 2014 and after a successful year in Edinburgh he caught the attention of Celtic, who signed him on a four-year deal.
The Scottish midfielder is the first signing of Neil McCanns time in charge of Dundee, who finished tenth in the Premiership last season and just avoided the relegation play-off.
Football Insider Verdict
It really looks as though Celtic’s move to sign Allan two years ago has proved to be a very poor piece of business. He is only half way through his contract at Parkhead and it really shows how sometimes the Bhoys can get their transfer dealings completely wrong. Allan will never amount to be a good enough player for Celtic, and that was proved after a terrible spell with Rotherham, who endured a humiliating relegation to League One this year. It could be a good signing for Dundee though, but their fans may be mindful of his time at United and might not be so willing to take him as one of their own.
