Done deal: Rangers sign senior man from PL club

By Harvey Byrne

Rangers have appointed Mark Allen as their new director of football, it was announced on Tuesday evening.

A statement on the Light Blues’ official website confirmed that the Ibrox giants had signed the senior man from cash-rich Premier League side Manchester City.

The 54-year-old had previously spent over seven years at the Manchester club as their academy director and Rangers will now hope that he can bring his experience with him to help return the Gers back to the top of the Scottish football pyramid.

Allen also holds a full UEFA coaching A licence and previously moved to San Diego to take up a football scholarship and business accounting degree.

Rangers have reportedly been on the search for a director of football following the departure of Frank McParland alongisde Mark Warburton in February.

They were linked with the likes of Ross Wilson from Southampton and Paul Mitchell of Tottenham.

However, Allen is the man the club have decided to go for and he will now link up with March appointment Pedro Caixinha.

The Gers have gone under many changes this summer and have already brought in six players this summer and Allen is joining at a busy time for the club.

Football Insider verdict:

Manchester City aren’t known for promoting players through their academy, which is where Allen predominantly worked. However, that is due to the club wanting to buy more proven players than handing youngsters an opportunity. This is likely to be one of the reasons why Allen has felt like he had to leave the Manchester side and he will now be looking to have more success with Rangers. The Gers want to challenge Celtic once again at the top of the Premiership table and additions like Allen can help them do so.
