Done deal: Tottenham centre-back agrees fresh terms with top-flight outfit

By Harvey Byrne

Tottenham defender Anton Walkes has agreed a loan extension with MLS side Atlanta United until the end of the season, it has been confirmed on Tuesday.

The official Spurs Twitter account announced that the 20-year-old had agreed fresh terms with Atlanta after making the move to America’s top-flight back in January.

The MLS season doesn’t run like European leagues and is schedueld for March until October, meaning Walkes is likely to return to north London in two months time.

The youngster has so far played 10 times in all competitions for Atlanta, who are currently sat in sixth placed in their first ever MLS campaign.

He will now be hoping to gain more experience and he has started the club’s last five league matches as Atlanta sit nine points off the top spot.

Walkes has only made one senior appearance for Tottenham in the first team to date, which came in the EFL Cup against Gillingham in September and he will be hoping he can gain more first team minutes on his return.

Football Insider verdict:

A move to the MLS has so far proven a success for Walkes and a lot more English youngsters should be recommended the move with the likes of former Manchester United youth teamer Jack Harrison making a name for himself with New York City. However, the American top-flight is also a massive level below that of the Premier League and at his age it doesn’t look like Walkes has what it takes  to make a name for himself at Tottenham. However, this extension is far more beneficial for him than what a return would be and the centre-back will be hoping to continue impressing with potential new suitors keeping an eye on him.
