Door opened for international enforcer to join Rangers from English club in January – report
Norwich have opened the door for Russell Martin to leave Carrow Road in January and the defender is keen on the idea of joining Rangers on loan until the end of the season, according to a report.
The Evening Times claims that Martin, 31, would consider a temporary switch to Ibrox after struggling for first-team football with Norwich, however the Glasgow giants are yet to make any contact with the English Championship club.
It is understood that Martin has been told by Canaries boss Daniel Farke that he has no place in his plans going forward and has been instructed that he must look for a new club in order to find first-team football.
Rangers manager Graeme Murty is said to be familiar with the Scotland international having worked with him while part of the coaching set-up at Carrow Road.
Norwich’s defensive enforcer Martin has bags of experience from the Premier League and Championship.
This season he has made just seven appearances in all competitions, however for most of his first-team absence he has been sidelined with a back injury.
Football Insider verdict
Rangers definitely need some reinforcements this month but may not have the money to do it. The Gers’ midfield is very thin at the moment with Graham Dorrans and Ryan Jack out while the defence is also looking bare with Bruno Alves likely to spend a period on the sidelines through injury. David Bates, Danny Wilson and Fabio Cardoso aren’t players who can be relied upon week in and week out so the Gers must try to find someone who can improve on them. Martin, from his days in the Premier League, offers bags of experience and is definitely an upgrade on what is already on offer at Ibrox. He may not be an attractive signing, but he is one that needs to be snapped up by Murty and Mark Allen.
In other Rangers news, this Gers mainstay is ready to quit Ibrox and is wanted by two English clubs.
