Eddie Howe could ‘quit’ Newcastle – and Saudi owners are to blame

Jamie Carragher has given his reasons why he believes Eddie Howe’s future at Newcastle is currently uncertain.

Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford has left Howe under some scrutiny for a underwhelming Premier League campaign so far.

The Toon have yet to win on the road in the Premier League this season and sit 14th in the table, seven points off the top four.

Howe has been Newcastle manager since 2021, and led the club to Carabao Cup glory last season against Liverpool.

Eddie Howe could be questioning Newcastle ambition

Howe is not at risk of the sack at Newcastle, but there is an acceptance that league form must improve.

As per The Telegraph, [21 November], Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes the club must back Howe or risk losing him.

A crossroads is looming, and could be reached next summer. Howe is becoming an elite coach in high demand,” Carragher said.

He may not publicly admit it, but privately he must be thinking about what comes next. He could replicate what he has done already, but does he have the tools to go any further?

Eddie Howe’s managerial record at Newcastle in all competitions.

Would he resist his country’s call if Thomas Tuchel does not renew his contract post-World Cup? Howe would be the Football Association’s outstanding candidate, comfortably the best English coach around, and capable of thriving at clubs that regularly compete for the Premier League title. He is that good.

Newcastle’s hierarchy must facilitate their manager’s desire to challenge at the very top. At the moment, they seem to be embarking upon a period of consolidation.”

Stadium plans delayed

Newcastle have made St James’ Park available for Euro 2028 matches, signalling that no new stadium will be built before 2030.

The decision puts back plans to create more revenue for the club, in what is a blow in bridging the gap between Newcastle and the Premier League big six.

Revenue is at its highest at Newcastle, but PSR rules have stood between the club and greater investment on the pitch.
