Eddie Howe tipped to sign off deal after ‘brilliant’ Newcastle update – pundit
Eddie Howe deserves a new contract after leading Newcastle United to Premier League survival.
That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 44-year-old’s future.
On Thursday (19 May) The Daily Mail reported Newcastle are set to open contract talks with Howe.
The Toon boss signed a two-and-a-half-year deal when he took over from Steve Bruce in November.
Howe took over Newcastle when they were bottom of the table and could still secure a top-ten finish.
His work has seen him nominated for the Premier League manager of the year award and McAvennie insists a new contract is richly deserved.
“Eddie took a chance on Newcastle, he really believes in his own ability,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I didn’t see this happening, how good Newcastle have been. I thought he would keep them up but I didn’t see them maybe finishing in the top 10.
“The work he has done is nothing short of miraculous. It’s why he’s been nominated for manager of the year.
“I’m not sure the fans were completely sold on him when he came in, maybe the owners weren’t either.
“A new deal would say ‘he is our guy for the future’. It would be a statement.
“It’s brilliant news for him personally as well, it’s deserved.”

Newcastle face Burnley on the last day of the season (22 May) with a win taking their points haul to 49.
They have already eclipsed their best points total since their return to the Premier League in 2017.
