Eric Dier could force manager U-turn amid ‘incredible’ Tottenham claim – Hutton

Alan Hutton has claimed Tottenham defender Eric Dier will “have one eye” on the England World Cup squad after scoring his first goal in three years.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs defender suggested Dier is playing his way back into international contention.

The 28-year-old scored in the Lilywhites’ opening Premier League game on Saturday (6 August).

The defender helped to secure a 4-1 victory against Southampton.

Dier has been overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate in recent squads.

On 23 June, the Mirror reported that FIFA have expanded the size of squads at this year’s World Cup from 23 to 26 players.

When asked by Football Insider if Dier could come back into Southgate’s thinking amid his recent form, Hutton said: “I think that’s a subject that’s probably on a lot of players’ minds at this moment in time.

Dier will certainly be one of them. He knows what it’s all about, he’s played for his country.

That was his first goal in three years which is incredible for somebody who attacks the ball so well.

He’ll have on eye on that World Cup squad and if he plays to that level then I don’t see why Southgate wouldn’t be watching him, especially when you look at the problems with [Harry] Maguire, Tyrone Mings didn’t play at the weekend.

If he [Dier] is playing week in week out to that level then Southgate will want him in the squad.
