Erik ten Hag has ‘real problem’ with Lisandro Martinez after Man United latest
Lisandro Martinez is an example of yet another Man United recruitment “failure”.
That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Red Devils’ latest defensive signing.
Martinez, 24, was hooked by Erik ten Hag at half-time as Man United slumped to a crushing 4-0 away defeat at Brentford on Saturday (13 August).
This came after an underwhelming debut against Brighton (7 August) in which he was bullied by Danny Welbeck.
McLeish claims Martinez may have to change position to become a success at Old Trafford.
“Everybody is in the same boat in terms of British football,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“Years ago, it definitely would not have happened [Martinez signing for Man United]. Nowadays, because the ball is played on the deck, you think it might work.
“People are going to exploit that. Premier League teams know what they are doing and will exploit that.
“You have the best players in the world in this league and it has been a problem for Martinez. That turns it into a real problem for Ten Hag.
“That doesn’t seem to be a signing where they have thought it through. Whether they can use him in a different position, but that would mean changing the position he bought him for.
“That would be another failure in recruitment.”

Martinez joined Ajax in May 2019 and helped the club win four major honours.
The versatile defender has made seven appearances for Argentina after making his international debut on 22 March 2019.
