Euro club eye January Celtic raid for 26-year-old, Rodgers makes emphatic decision – report

Danish giants FC Copenhagen are eyeing a raid of Celtic in January for out-of-favour defender Erik Sviatchenko, according to a report.

The Daily Record claims that the European club have the 26-year-old back on their radar and are plotting a £1.5million move for him.

It is understood that Copenhagen were interested in signing Sviatchenko in the summer before a move broke down but now they have netted £4million in flogging Benjamin Verbic to Dynamo Kiev, meaning they have the funds to make a swoop for the Parkhead centre-back.

The report adds that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has made the emphatic decision to allow the Denmark international to leave Glasgow after the signing of Marvin Compper from RB Leipzig was sealed earlier this month.

Dedryck Boyata, Jozo Simunovic and teenager Kristoffer Ajer have all been above Sviatchenko in the centre-back pecking order recently, and when Compper officially arrives next month, it is likely that the Dane will slip further into the Parkhead shadows.

Football Insider verdict

Sviatchenko is clearly out of Rodgers’ mind at the moment and it that probably proves that the Hoops manager is willing to cash in on him next month. Although Boyata and Simunovic haven’t been impressive, that has still seen Rodgers call on young Ajer to play instead of Sviatchenko, which really says a lot about his situation at the club. By moving to Copenhagen, it will probably be a good move for all parties concerned and the potential £1.5million fee will bring back the money spent on Compper. Rodgers still has a bit more work to do in January if he wants to see his side go as far as possible in the Europa League.
