‘Best player’, ‘Talisman’ – Everton fans rave about one man despite 2-1 loss v Burnley
Burnley took all three points with a 2-1 win against West Ham in the Premier League at Turf Moor on Saturday, which solidifies their high-flying position in seventh.
Cenk Tosun gave the Toffees a 20th-minute lead heading in from Theo Walcott’s pass in an opening 45 minutes where the Turkish forward put the home-side under a great deal of pressure.
Ashley Barnes levelled matters with a 56th-minute effort that Jordan Pickford could do nothing about in goal, before Chris Wood won it for the home side late on.
It was Tosun’s return to the starting XI after Everton manager Sam Allardyce had publicly stated that his £27million signing from Besiktas was struggling to deal with the physicality of the English top-flight.
But against the Clarets, there were no such issues as the striker put on a fine performance where the link up play between Gylfi Sigurdsson, Theo Walcott and the Turk caused Burnley no end of problems.
Not only was he sharp in attack but defensively speaking, he did plenty of the dirty work too, jogging back to help out his teammates whenever they looked in danger.
And now, with this his first goal in an Everton shirt, the Turkish international has shown that he can perform in the Premier League.
It didn’t help his side today, although it’s a promising sign for the future.
Here is a selection of Twitter responses following Tosun’s first goal for the Toffees:
