Everton news: Borson makes new points deduction claim after Amadou Onana sale
Amadou Onana’s big-money move to Aston Villa could help Everton in their bid to avoid another crushing points deduction next season.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Merseyside giants could argue on mitigation they sold Onana in July to help correct any potential profit and sustainability (PSR) breach for 2023-24 if their capitalisation case goes against them.
Everton have sold the 22-year-old to Villa after Football Insider revealed on 15 July the two Premier League clubs had agreed a £50million deal.
It comes after Sean Dyche’s side were believed to be close to breaching the PSR rules for 2023-24 after being handed an eight-point deduction last season following two separate spending breaches.
The Merseysiders are currently in dispute with the Premier League regarding the status of certain costs associated with the building of their new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock and face a further independent committee hearing later this year.
Everton could escape further points deduction after Amadou Onana sale
Borson revealed the Onana sale could help Everton avoid another significant points deduction if their upcoming capitalisation case goes against them.
He told Football Insider: “If they lose the capitalisation case they have ongoing now, it will probably mean they will also inadvertently end up breaching for 2023-24.
“That would mean they would have another case they would have to answer in the second half of the coming season.
“But what they will be able to argue is on mitigation that they sold a player in July, which will look better.
“If the PSR profit is £25million, it will probably correct the PSR breach for the season just gone.
“Although it won’t mean that they won’t have any penalty at all and won’t cut across the fact that they had actually breached, it would be good mitigation and would make a very meaningful difference to the penalty that they would suffer.

“But I stress this is all in the situation that they lose the capitalisation issue.
“If they win that capitalisation case, they will have been fine for 2023-24.”
