Sources: Everton plot move for Conceicao as he stalls on Porto extension

FC Porto manager Sergio Conceicao is in the frame for the Everton job, Football Insider understands.

The 46-year-old is in talks with Porto over a new contract but is yet to put pen to paper.

An Everton source told Football Insider that has opened the door to a Goodison Park switch and they are keeping tabs on his situation.

He is in the running to replace Carlo Ancelotti following his shock departure to Real Madrid, first reported by this site in mid-May.

Conceicao’s countryman Nuno Espirito Santo is also an early contender for the post along with Rafael Benitez and Eddie Howe.

The experienced Portugese manager has spent four seasons with the 29-time Primeira Liga champions.

Two of those titles were won on his watch in the 2017-18 and 2019-20 campaigns.

But despite losing just twice all season, his side was unable to retain their crown in 2020-21 and finished five points behind Sporting in 2nd place.

Conceicao is one of a growing school of talented Portuguese coaches, including Fernando Santos, Jorge Jesus, Paulo Fonseca and Leonardo Jardim.

He featured 56 times for the national team in his playing days during a career that also took in two spells at Porto, as well as Inter Milan and Lazio.

After hanging up his boots, Conceicao took his first managerial job at lower-league Portuguese side Olhanense.

He later managed Academica, Braga and Vitoria Guimaraes before taking his first job outside his homeland with Nantes in France.

A famously fiery character, Conceicao was sent off four times in the 2020-21 campaign for Porto.

If appointed, his temperament will be a gear change from the relentless poise of Ancelotti.
