Ex-Fifa official: Liverpool deserve Premier League vote after ‘out of order’ development

Liverpool and the rest of the Premier League should be allowed to vote on whether they want extended stoppage time to be introduced.

That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football insider about the new system that has been introduced at the World Cup.

The Daily Mail reported last week (24 November) that the Premier League will not be following Fifa’s lead.

It is claimed that there have been no talks between officials and the PGMOL over whether a change is needed.

“Listen, I don’t know who has made that decision but it seems to me that it’s off the cuff,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I think that the process should be, this should be highlighted and the 20 shareholders should be allowed to vote on it.

“I think a unilateral decision from the top saying ‘We’re going to ignore that’, if that’s come from the PGMOL they are out of order and I think the Premier League are out of order.

“Ultimately, what counts is value for money for fans. You’re looking at 56 minutes of actual playing time in a 90 minute game. Would you accept buying a car only for it to have three wheels?

“I’m clear that I think a countdown clock and an independent timekeeper should be the approach. That it can’t happen overnight but I think it should be a discussion that takes place.

“In the meantime, the Premier League should be saying to the referees, we want a generous amount of stoppage time in both halves.

“I know where the pressure’s come, it’s from Super Sunday when there is a limited amount of time between the two games.”
