Ex-Fifa official: Tottenham told to issue warning to players after confirmed ban news
Tottenham should warn their players of the dangers of flares after Richarlison was handed a one-game suspension for throwing one back into the crowd.
That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the 25-year-old will miss Spurs’ opening game of the 2022-23 Premier League season.
The FA confirmed last week (5 July) that Richarlison had been handed a one-game suspension and a £25,000 fine for throwing a flare during Everton’s 1-0 win over Chelsea (1 May).
He has since completed a move to Tottenham but the ban will transfer over so he will sit out the visit of Southampton on the opening day (6 August).
“What it highlights to me is that the authorities have got to do more, the clubs have got to do more,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“They have a responsibility. These players and the officials are their employees and they have every right to work in a safe environment.
“It touches on that subject. The clubs need to say ‘What are we going to do about players and have we got a proper deterrent? And what are we going to do about objects being thrown in general? What are we going to do about spectators going onto the field of play?’

“Let’s not drift back in malaise to what I was seeing in the 1970s and 80s which was unacceptable.
“The clubs should now be in pre-season warning the players to ignore and not take any action.”
In other news, a London club has made a move to sign a Tottenham 24-year-old after a green light from Antonio Conte.
