Ex-Premier League referee: Antonio Conte set for extended ban amid new Tottenham controversy
Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel will be handed touchline bans for the scenes after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday (14 August).
That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the controversy at the full-time whistle.
Both managers, who had been booked after Spus’ first goal, were shown red cards after an extended handshake after the final whistle prompted a mass confrontation.
Tuchel was upset at both Tottenham goals that he felt should not have stood for fouls in the build-up.
“It’s a local derby, it’s always going to be high tempo,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley
“Between those two strong characters, there’s always going to be a risk of a clash.
“I do think what they did was irresponsible, however way you look at it. One man, the fourth official is not going to control a mass of people.
“It’s great to have passion but this was irresponsible.
“They were given that warning. Obviously, Tuchel was upset but that’s the nature of the game.
“There was little else at the time of the incident that Anthony Taylor and Peter Bankes could have done, other than issue the sanction.
“I think the Premier League and the FA, the FA in particular, have now got to really take action on this particular scenario.
“It can incite the spectators and draw others into a melee that’s unsightly.
“The Premier League will be behind themselves. They will be happy with the game but they won’t be happy with the tarnishing of the image of the game.
“That incident takes away from what happened in the game.
“There will be touchline bans. They had the warning when the yellow card was issued. They ignored it and it blew up after the game.
“Touchline bans for both might seem harsh but that’s what I expect.

“I’d like the Premier League, via the PGMOL, to instruct the referees to be a little bit tighter on the management of the technical area.
“This is misconduct and you cannot allow it.”
