Ex-Premier League referee issues ‘dangerous’ Richarlison claim after confirmed Tottenham news

Richarlison can have no complaints as he is set to miss the opening game of the 2022-23 season for Tottenham through suspension.

That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Richarlison’s ban was confirmed.

The FA revealed last week (5 July) that the 25-year-old had been handed a one-game suspension and a £25,000 fine for throwing a flare during Everton’s 1-0 win over Chelsea (1 May).

The Brazilian scored the only goal of the game and picked up the object in celebration before launching back into the Goodison Park crowd.

He will now be unavailable for Spurs when they welcome Southampton on the opening day of the 2022-23 season (6 August).

Tottenham then travel to London rivals Chelsea a week later where Richarlison will be free to make his competitive debut for the club.

“The fans will be upset because they feel Richarlison has done nothing wrong,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I highlighted at the time, the importance of players not to overreact with these things and certainly not put spectators in danger.

“Just by throwing it over their heads, even if it was into a dead area as the fans said, it’s till dangerous.

“The ban is about right. I don’t think the player can complain.

“I think his reaction was natural, I don’t think he was annoyed. He just wanted to get rid of the flare and get on with the game.

“This sends a message out to the players.”
