Ex-striker shares ‘huge’ Newcastle verdict that paves way for ‘brilliant’ 21/22 season
Newcastle United can reproduce their “brilliant” recent form at the start of next season after ending the campaign on a “huge” high.
That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ recent goal glut.
Newcastle have scored 16 goals in their last eight games after only scoring eight in their previous 13.
Surprisingly, these goals have come against some of the Premier League’s tops sides.
Steve Bruce’s side scored three against West Ham and four against Leicester before putting three past the Champions.
Even more impressively, Newcastle didn’t have Callum Wilson available for their goal-fest with Man City.
McAvennie insists this is critical for Newcastle and paves the way for what could be brighter times next season.
“It’s huge, a huge positive,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“But you have to look at who was playing. When you’re playing Man City it’s always tough because even their back-up players are great.
“It will be good for the boys to go out there and grab a few goals. They have played really well since they confirmed their safety, they have been brilliant and that bodes well for them to be brilliant next season.
“Bruce has done well to keep them up. He’ll be hoping for another positive result before the end of the season.
“They look like they don’t want the season to finish. They are playing some good stuff and scoring a lot of goals.
“When Wilson is in there as well, they will be fine. But they need those back up players to start scoring and it looks like they have started to.”
Emil Krafth, Joelinton and Joe Willock scored Newcastle’s goals against Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Magpies travel to Fulham on Sunday for their final game of the season.
