Exclusive: Brown tips Gerrard to be wowed after Rangers transfer hunt development
Michael Brown suggests the likes of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will be impressed by Lyle Taylor’s attitude despite his refusal to play for Charlton again this season.
The former Premier League midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 30-year-old’s suitors will not be put off by the striker’s major decision.
Charlton manager Lee Bowyer has confirmed that Taylor has told the club he will not play for them when the Championship resumes, revealing his fears about picking up an injury before he becomes a free agent this summer.
As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, Rangers are among the clubs in the hunt to sign Taylor for nothing when his contract expires.
Having seen the striker work his way up through the lower reaches of English football to reach the Championship, Brown believes interested sides will be more impressed than concerned about his attitude.
Asked what he thought Gerrard would make of Taylor’s refusal to play, Brown told Football Insider: “I think it was great when I heard Lee Bowyer’s comments on where he’s (Taylor) come from. He’s never really earned anything regarding the game.
“He’s had to take knock back after knock back, after injury and he’s come back through it and done well. He realises this is a big opportunity for him and his family and it is quite sad it hasn’t worked out for Charlton, especially with the situation they’re in.
“I think he’s saying he hopes everybody understands this is a real, real big move and decision for him. There will be clubs (like Rangers) going: ‘These are his circumstances – the injury factor, released, never played – and he’s always working, working, working and his desire to go up.’
“I think that will impress the other clubs regarding his knock backs and his willingness to come back and keep doing well. They’ll see it from his point of view.”
Taylor spent time in the youth ranks at Millwall before dropping down the tiers to join Concord Rangers.
He has scored 11 goals in 22 appearances for Charlton, with the Addicks currently sitting in the relegation zone.
