Exclusive: Celtic player receives lucrative contract proposal, ‘concrete steps’ for transfer

Celtic have made a contract proposal to Odsonne Edouard that would see him rocket into the top bracket of earners at the club, Football Insider understands.

The Hoops star striker lags well behind the likes of Christopher Jullien, Callum McGregor and Scott Brown in the Parkhead pay stakes.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club are working to extend Edouard’s deal to prevent him leaving this summer and a big pay rise forms part of their pitch.

The Hoops are aware of strong interest in the French centre-forward, 22, from leading clubs south of the border and also across Europe.

Some have already made what are said to be “concrete steps” to lure Edouard from the east end of Glasgow.

Contact has been made with the player’s representatives even though more formal moves are on hold amid the financial uncertainty caused by Covid-19.

Edouard is happy and settled at Celtic but would need certain conditions to be met for him to commit to either a new deal or staying beyond this summer.

As revealed by Football Insider last month, that includes a release clause in the deal giving him the freedom to leave if a club pays the fee.

Celtic had hoped they would secure a record fee for Edouard were they to fail to persuade him to stay, although a fee more than the £25m Kieran Tierney price may now be more difficult.

Manager Neil Lennon claimed last month the club has made no progress in contract talks with the front man.

Edouard signed a four-year contract in the summer of 2018 when his initial season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain was converted into a club-record £9million transfer.

His 45 Celtic appearances this season have yielded 27 goals and 19 assists while he has also weighed in with a remarkable 11 goals in just six France Under-21s matches.
