Exclusive: Danny Mills suggests reported West Ham pursuit may oust 25-year-old from first-team

Danny Mills approved of West Ham being in pursuit of Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud as the Frenchman would suit David Moyes’ style of play.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England full-back suggested the Blues forward was capable of ousting Sebastien Haller from the first-team to become the Hammers’ first-choice striker.

It was recently reported that Giroud was Moyes’ No.1 target for the Hammers in January with the board planning to support their manager in the transfer market.

Mills admitted that while the 33-year-old wasn’t the greatest goalscorer in the world, given his ability to play as a target man, he could easily become the Hammers’ No.1 forward.

The ex-defender explained that Giroud could lead the line by himself or work alongside Haller if the 25-year-old is able to play a little wider.

When asked whether Giroud would be suitable back-up for Haller, Mills told Football Insider: “He might even be No.1 as he’s a David Moyes-type player.

“We know how Moyes likes to play, and you’d have to say that he does things by being very organised, very solid and utilising a target man.

“Get the ball up to him and work from there, that’s what Moyes has had and always wanted at his football clubs.

“He might not be the greatest goalscorer, he scores goals without a doubt with the right service, by getting those balls into the box.

“But there’s no reason why he can’t pull off that sort of move, still in London which would suit Giroud I’m sure, if he can get him then there’s no reason why he can’t be the No.1 striker or even a partner for Haller if he plays maybe a little more wider.”

Haller only joined the Hammers in the summer and has so far managed to score six goals in the 20 appearances he has made for the club.

Giroud has struggled to feature for Chelsea this season and in comparison has only scored once in his seven outings.
