Exclusive: Darren Bent urges Everton to cling to first-teamer with ‘Great move’ on the cards
Darren Bent urged Everton to cling to defender Mason Holgate with Newcastle United keen on his services.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England international shared that if he was the Toffees he wouldn’t let the centre-back joined the Magpies.
Holgate has broken into the Toffees first-team in recent weeks with the 23-year-old playing every minute of the club’s last eight league games.
Football Insider recently reported that Newcastle United were keen on signing Holgate for £14million with the Merseyside giants unsure if they wanted to sell him or keep him.
Bent explained that joining the Magpies was a great move for Holgate to have on the cards, but insisted the Toffees have to hold on to him.
When asked if it would be a bad decision for Everton to sell Holgate, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, because I think Mason Holgate has shown signs he can be a top centre-half.
“When you’re playing next to inconsistent centre-halves it can become difficult, for him it would be a great move if he can get it, but if I was Everton I’d be holding on to him as he has shown that he can be a very good centre-half.”
The Toffees are currently without a permanent manager with Duncan Ferguson currently in temporary charge of the first-team.
The Scottish coach has taken charge of two games for the Toffees so far, with them beating Chelsea and drawing with Manchester United.
