Exclusive: Everton must sell for £40m Mitrovic deal amid £100m+ transfer reveal
Everton’s transfer business will be affected by the Premier League’s PSR rules despite appearing to be safe from another sanction.
That is according to football finance expert Dan Plumley, who exclusively explained to Football Insider how he expected the Toffees to operate in this summer’s transfer window.
Everton‘s last few transfer windows have been plagued by the club’s poor financial position, and the club were a part of the mad dash to become PSR compliant in the summer of 2024.
Tim Iroegbunam joined Everton, with Lewis Dobbin and Amadou Onana leaving Goodison Park for Aston Villa.
Since the 2021/22 season, the Toffees have been forced to sell before buying, achieving a negative net spend in each of those seasons.
And whilst their financial situation has improved markedly since The Friedkin Group bought Everton, the club will still need to act with restraint if they want to make the significant improvements their squad requires this summer.

Everton unlikely to spend more than £100m this summer
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, finance expert Plumley outlined his expectations on how much Everton would spend this summer.
The senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University does not expect the club to push above the £100m mark in spending, and with the club in the market for a new striker, amongst other positions, the Toffees may need to spend before shelling out big fees.
Pete O’Rourke previously revealed to Football Insider that Everton would struggle to afford Aleksandar Mitrovic, as the club looks for replacements for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Neal Maupay.
Al Hilal’s former Fulham star Mitrovic has also been linked to the likes of West Ham for £40m and would fit the bill as a new number one striker for David Moyes, but spending still looks like being tempered for the Toffees.
Plumley said: “Now, again, you’ve got to look at it through the lens of not necessarily what they can spend, because we don’t know that number is in terms of their internal budget, but what’s their headroom in terms of ability to spend?

“That’s what we’re basing the predictions on, and they’re in that group of two or three clubs that appear to be safe from PSR now, but have still got to be mindful of it.
“And I said before, I would expect them to spend but I don’t expect them to go out and spend £100-150million, I don’t think they’re in that kind of ballpark.
“Because despite the positives of the takeover and the financial benefits that’s brought with it, again, it’s not a blank chequebook approach and they shouldn’t be taking that approach.
“So I can see why a £40m valuation for a striker is causing them a little bit of concern, to a degree.
“I think this also comes down, again, to if you are going to spend that sort of money on a striker, you’ve probably got to move a couple of players on as well.

“We know they’ve got some decent players that would command a decent fee in the market, so they’ve got to be prepared if they’re going to go into those kinds of evaluations of £40-50m for a striker.
“I think they’ve got to be prepared to let one or two go as a counterbalance to that.
“So in terms of a number, they’re probably okay to spend a little bit with where they’re at with PSR, but I certainly don’t see them pushing into the £100m plus territory for total outlay.
“I just I still don’t think they’re in that space yet.”

Everton confident on agreeing new Jarrad Branthwaite deal
Should the Toffees need to sell a player to fund their rebuild this summer, Jarrad Branthwaite would be one of the prime candidates.
The English centre-back has suitors across Europe and would command a significant fee, given his talent and age.
However, Everton are aiming to agree a new contract with Branthwaite, Mick Brown told Football Insider.
Other than the 22-year-old, the Toffees have few players they could sell for a significant sum this summer, meaning the club may be forced to turn to cheaper alternatives in their search to strengthen David Moyes’ squad.
