Exclusive: Kevin Thelwell’s job under scrutiny at Rangers

Kevin Thelwell’s position at Rangers is under growing scrutiny, sources have told Football Insider.

The director of football joined from Everton at the start of the summer but his reign has been marked by underwhelming signings and the calamitous appointment of Russell Martin.

In their search for a new boss, Rangers have already been turned down by Steven Gerrard and Sean Dyche and are now exploring alternatives a week on from Martin’s exit.

It comes amid fierce criticism from supporters over Thelwell’s role in the summer window and the decision to appoint Martin, a move that backfired spectacularly.

Kevin Thelwell takes blame for Rangers manager failure

Now, sources say that Ibrox chiefs have given Thelwell a less central role in the search for a new manager.

Gerrard had looked all set to take over at Rangers, following positive talks between the former Liverpool man and the club, but eventually opted to reject a move back to Glasgow.

Thelwell is taking the majority of the blame for not getting the deal over the line, and that, coupled with his failures over the summer, has seemingly proved enough for the hierarchy.

Rangers have now moved on to other managerial options, with former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl the current favourite to get the job.

Rangers consider former West Ham boss

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed that Rangers are considering Slaven Bilic for the manager’s job after the latest rejections.

The former West Ham boss, who has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Fateh in August 2024, has now emerged as a key contender.

Bilic was an option for West Ham in their attempts to replace Graham Potter, hinting that he was eager to get back into management.

However, he missed out on a surprise return to the London Stadium when they opted to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo, who controversially left Nottingham Forest earlier this season.
