Liverpool have made a dramatic £2million move for Preston defender Ben Davies, Football Insider can reveal.

The Reds have set their sights on the 25-year-old as they look to address their defensive injury problems with the signing of a centre-half before tomorrow's deadline.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the Merseyside club have contacted North End about a last-gasp deal to hijack Celtic's bid for the centre-back.

Davies has just six months left on his contract at Deepdale and has been in talks with Celtic and Bournemouth regarding a move.

Celtic were leading the race to sign Davies, who rejected a club-record £17,000-a-week contract to stay at Preston over the festive period, but Liverpool's approach could change that.

Davies has been one of Preston's standout performers in recent times, he has made 19 Championship appearances this season and started yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp's side are in the market for a centre-half following injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Fabinho.

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has been selected to partner Nathaniel Phillips for today's Premier League match against West Ham.
