Exclusive: Man City planning to re-sign academy product to replace Kyle Walker

Man City are interested in re-signing Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong in a shock twist, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Dutchman has emerged as an option to replace Kyle Walker as a result of his recent decline in form.

Football Insider revealed in November that Man City staff have raised concerns about the Walker’s performances so far this season.

Now, City’s transfer team have begun assessing the transfer market for potential replacements.

Frimpong, 24, came through the academy system at the Etihad before leaving to join Celtic in search of first-team football in 2019.

He has since gone on to become one of the most highly-regarded full-backs in Europe as was a crucial part of the Leverkusen side which went unbeaten in the 2023-24 Bundesliga season.

As a result, City have added them to their list of targets ahead of the January transfer window with a potential reunion in mind.

Walker’s underwhelming performances so far this season have become a major issue for City, who are now planning to improve both at right-back and left-back in the transfer window.

Now aged 34, the England full-back has been at fault for a number of goals already this season and has taken stick from the stands at the Etihad as a result.

City coaches, meanwhile, are said to have raised concerns about his performances and his sudden decline this season.

Meanwhile, City have taken just one win in their last ten games across all competitions and are dealing with an ongoing crisis both in injuries and confidence.

With the January transfer window rapidly approaching, there is a growing expectation that the club will have to spend big to refresh their squad.
