Exclusive: PL top-4 club launch Rangers transfer mission, Whelan view: ‘Perfect’

Leicester City would be the perfect destination for Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos this summer, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds and Aberdeen forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 23-year-old would flourish in such a high-quality side full of top players.

As revealed by Football Insider, Leicester have launched a ‘deep dive’ into Morelos’ character and background ahead of a potential summer raid at Ibrox.

Whelan insists he has no doubts about Morelos being able to cut it in the Premier League and believes third-placed Leicester would be a club he would thrive at.

Asked if the King Power Stadium would be the “perfect” destination for Morelos, Whelan told Football Insider: “Absolutely, yeah. Look, it’s a lot more competitive in the Premier League than Scotland, probably a lot more aggressive, quicker.

“It’s whether he can adapt to that sort of football and he’s an international player so I’ve got no doubt he can. It might take a little bit of time but look, if he goes to Leicester, they play really exciting, attacking football.

“(James) Maddison has said he wants to stay at Leicester which is a massive plus because he’ll be creating so many chances from that midfield are as well.

“Whoever goes to Leicester as a striker, you’re going into a team that’s full of flair and creativity – but are you going to take Vardy’s place? Are you going to play alongside him?”

Morelos has been a constant threat for Rangers since joining the club, scoring 77 goals in 137 appearances across all competitions.

He has netted 29 times this season, although only one of those goals has come since the winter break in Scotland.
