The 18-year-old has been given permission to head down to the south coast for talks and a medical ahead of the 11pm deadline on Monday night (3 February).
Football Insider revealed on Saturday (1 February) that Sunderland rejected a formal offer from Brighton for the winger – but the Seagulls are now set to complete a deadline-day deal.
Watson has made his breakthrough at the senior level for Sunderland this season after coming through the ranks with the Black Cats.
The teenager, who is currently out with injury, has made 11 first-team appearances in the 2024-25 campaign.
He has started in six of those outings and scored his first Championship goals with a brace in the win over Stoke City in December.
Watson has also starred in Under-21 action this season, hitting five goals and notching three assists in five Premier League 2 games.
The England Under-18 international made his senior debut for Sunderland in March 2023.
