Not special enough – Whelan slams Leeds plan for dazzler with 4 goals in his last 10

Noel Whelan insisted Leeds United need to be looking for “bigger and better” strikers than Rhian Brewster if they gain promotion this season.

The former Elland Road forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, urged Victor Orta to explore other targets – someone of international quality who could hopefully spearhead the United attack in the Premier League next season.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Whites will be in the race to sign the 20-year-old if he is loaned out again by Liverpool next season.

Leeds attempted to sign Brewster in January but lost out to Swansea with the striker going on to score four times in 11 appearances, all of them coming in his last 10 games.

When asked by Football Insider if he would welcome the addition of the young striker, Whelan said: “Brewster is a good young player and he is scoring goals in the Championship for Swansea but if we get investment we need to be looking bigger and better. Is he going to keep up us in the Premier League? Probably not.

“We need to spend money this summer and a goalscorer is a one that we will need to part a lot of money with.

“It might be an option but I would like to be putting my money on international players and special players who will make a difference. There are bigger gems out there.”

United are expected to be in the market for a new number nine with Jean-Kevin Augustin failing to impress following his arrival from RB Leipzig on a loan-to-buy deal that is set to become permanent if they get promoted.

The French striker mustering just three substitute appearances this campaign having struggled to gain the required fitness.
