Expert can’t believe ‘nonsensical’ Cristiano Ronaldo transfer plan after Man United latest
Noel Whelan has claimed a potential contract extension for Cristiano Ronaldo “makes no sense” if Man United are to loan him out this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted there is “no guarantee” the 37-year-old would return to news of Champions League football next summer.
According to The Sun (23 July), Man United will sanction a loan exit for Ronaldo this summer – if he signs the one-year contract extension in his current deal at Old Trafford.
The striker, who has one year remaining on his current terms, is wanted by Atletico Madrid – according to the report.
As per The Athletic (26 July), Ronaldo has arrived at Man United’s Carrington training ground with his agent Jorge Mendes for talks about his future at the club.
The legendary forward had earlier informed chiefs of his desire to leave the club and is yet to return to full pre-season training with his teammates.
Whelan urged Man United to move on and look to “the future” should Ronaldo depart this summer.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “It makes no sense.
“If he’s going out on loan then it makes no sense to offer him a new contract. Why would Ronaldo take that deal if he wants Champions League football?
“There’s no guarantee that things will be different next season. If they let him go this summer, it’s to make both parties happy.

“If he leaves, then Man United need to get on with the future. He’s unhappy at the club.
“Champions League football is by no means a given considering just how strong other clubs are this season.”
