Expert issues ‘massive’ Darwin Nunez claim after Liverpool source’s reveal

Darwin Nunez would prefer a move to Liverpool over any other club this summer.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the striker’s possible move to Anfield.

A Liverpool source told Football Insider on Tuesday (7 June), the club are lining up a formal move for Nunez after scouting him extensively during the 2021-22 season.

His profile – pace, strength, finishing and the ability to play out wide and down the middle -suits what Jurgen Klopp and his staff are seeking.

Benfica has set a £55million-plus asking price on the striker’s head after his outstanding form over the past 12 months.

McAvennie insists there is nowhere better than Liverpool for Nunez to move this summer.

“If Nunez is leaving, he would rather go to Liverpool than anywhere else,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s not going to Man City, not after they just signed Haaland. It’s a no brainer. Liverpool were so close to winning everything.

“It might be time for a fresh start with Mane and Salah on about leaving. If you are going to sell them then you have to bring players like Nunez in.

“You can’t bring in inferior players. I like Diaz so they have proved they can sign those players.

“To go to a club like Liverpool, Nunez would want to play for a manager like Klopp.

“Liverpool is such a massive club, one of the biggest in the world. Why wouldn’t you want to go there?”

Nunez netted 34 times in 41 appearances for Benfica during the 2021/22 campaign.

Meanwhile, Mane’s future is in doubt as he heads into the final year of his Anfield contract.
