Ferguson gives his verdict on Rangers summer signing, brings up Joey Barton
By Harvey Byrne
Former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has told that the summer signing of Graham Dorrans has left him more excited than when Joey Barton joined last summer.
The 30-year-old midfielder departed Norwich earlier in the month for his boyhood club in a fee believed to be around £1.3million.
There is plenty of hype and expectancy around the transfer with many believing the addition of Dorrans to be a top one given his experience of playing in the Premier League.
Now, ex-midfielder Ferguson has told that he believes Dorrans could be the most significant capture in Scottish football of the 2017 summer window.
“Graham Dorrans is going to prove the key signing of the summer – possibly even the most significant capture in Scottish football during this transfer window,” wrote Ferguson on his column for the Daily Record.
“This time last year I was pleased to see Joey Barton unveiled as the marquee signing at Ibrox but, of course, for reasons well documented that transfer didn’t live up to its pre-season billing.
“But as much as I rated Barton, I’m even more excited about Dorrans because he is exactly what Rangers have been crying out for on a number of fronts.”
The signing of Barton didn’t go to plan for Rangers last year and he had his contract terminated in November following a training ground argument with Andy Halliday in September.
Fans will now certainly be hoping for more success from the capture of Dorrans this time around and given the Glasgow-born midfielder’s own ties to Rangers he may well become a key player for the Gers at this late stage of his career.
It is the first time has played in Scotland since leaving for West Brom in 2008 and after agreeing a two-year deal at Ibrox he will be hoping the gap closes on fierce rivals Celtic over the course of his stay.
