Ferguson: This is the only thing worrying me about Rangers’ summer signings

By Harvey Byrne

Former midfielder and captain Barry Ferguson has told that his only worry about Rangers’ summer signings are the amount of foreign imports.

The Ibrox giants have brought in a massive eight players already this summer as manager Pedro Caixinha plans to strengthen his squad in his first window.

However, of those, only one of them was previously based in the United Kingdom with Ryan Jack joining after the end of his contract at Premiership runners-up Aberdeen.

Now, Ferguson has told that during his time at Rangers a number of foreign signings had “the shock of their lives” at the demands and pace of Scottish football and he now believes several Gers men may feel likewise next season.

“I don’t know too much about most of the signings,” said Ferguson, as quoted by BBC Sport.

“Obviously, I know Bruno Alves, who has got 90-odd caps for Portugal. I’ve seen him play quite a bit. He’s an experienced centre-half and a really good player. And Ryan Jack, I know obviously [from his time at Aberdeen].

“I’ve got to take my hat off to Pedro Caixinha. He’s come in and he’s identified that he’s needed quite a lot of players. He’s done his homework early and he’s made a lot of signings pretty early as well.

“My only worry is, there’s quite a lot of foreign players. In my time when foreign players came in to Rangers, they got the shock of their lives with demands that are put on them, the pace of Scottish football.”

Alongside competing domestically Rangers will also be looking to go on a run in the Europa League and the foreign imports may be more suited to playing in Europe at first.

However, the Ibrox giants will also be looking to close the gap on fierce rivals Celtic in the next campaign, meaning the new signings will have to hit the ground running in the Premiership.

Rangers will kick off their season on Thursday against Luxembourg-based side FC Progres Niederkorn for their first leg Europa League qualifier at Ibrox, while they will kick off their Premiership campaign against last season’s ninth placed club Motherwell.
