Future of rarely-seen Celtic outcast must be sorted before pre-season begins
COMMENT
On the face of it Marvin Compper looks to have no future at Celtic.
The German has only played one game for the Hoops since joining in January from Leipzig, and has rarely even featured on the bench for the Bhoys.
The odd thing is that the Hoops spent a decent amount of money on the player – £900,000 – which makes his lack of playing time even more bizarre.
With Kristoffer Ajer and Dedryck Boyata established as the Hoops’ centre-back duo, there looks to be no way back for the 32-year-old.
But perhaps he still has a future at the club.
Boyata and Jozo Simounovic are not guaranteed to still be with the Hoops next season, due to contract issues and poor form respectively.
If both players depart then there could yet be a reprieve for Compper, in what would be one of the most unlikely comebacks for a while at Celtic Park.
Of course, what is more likely to happen is that the players and Brendan Rodgers will talk things over and he will be released from his contract.
But you never know in football, the unexpected happens all the time, and Compper could yet resurrect his Hoops career.
The Hoops should try and resolve the issue as soon as they can though, as if the player is to depart then he will want to find a new club as soon as possible, before pre-season training if they can.
