Celtic 28-year-old future looks bleak despite very impressive performance

Despite a very impressive performance from Cristian Gamboa for Costa Rica against Scotland on Friday, the right-back’s future prospects at Celtic still look bleak.

The 28-year-old is in the bizarre position of being one of the few Hoops players who is set to play at the World Cup in Russia in the summer, yet he is nowhere near being a first choice pick at Celtic Park.

Gamboa has only made three appearances for the Bhoys this season, most recently in a goalless draw with St Johnstone in February when Brendan Rodgers picked mostly squad players ahead of the Europa League clash with Zenit.

Even though he signed the player from West Brom last season, Rodgers doesn’t seem to really trust Gamboa, which is perhaps why he hasn’t displaced Mikael Lustig as the Hoops’ right-back, despite some very poor performances from Lustig this season.

Gamboa was poor when injuries lead to him starting against Bayern Munich in the Champions League in October, but then none of the rest of the team covered themselves in glory that night, and it is odd if he is being shunned for that one game.

Gamboa still has another year left on his contract when the season ends, but with first-team appearances so few and far between, his best bet is to leave the club in the summer, either on-loan or in a permanent move.
