‘Giant of a club’ – Veteran defender sends message to Rangers fans as he confirms exit
Veteran defender Russell Martin has sent a message to Rangers fans after confirming his exit after his loan deal with the Ibrox giants came to an end – saying it was an “absolute honour” to play for the Gers.
Martin joined the Light Blues in January on loan from Norwich City and was a mainstay in the side over the second-half of the campaign but didn’t do enough to win a permanent move to Ibrox.
The 32-year-old revealed he hoped the Gers can start winning trophies again and give the fans what they “deserve” after continuing to turn up in huge numbers despite struggling to a third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership.
“Was an absolute honour to have the chance to play for Rangers,” Martin said on his personal Instagram account.
“Giant of a club with loads of great people and I really hope it gets back to winning trophies as soon as possible as that’s what the fans deserve. Learnt a lot in a short space of time that I’ll take with me in the future. All the best to everyone involved with the club, good luck and thanks again.”
Football Insider verdict:
Martin always talks well but his performances were nowhere near good enough to earn him a permanent deal with the Light Blues so it makes sense that he is going back to Norwich. Despite never performing as hoped, it’s clear the Scotland international loved his time at Ibrox and only has good things to say about the club. With Steven Gerrard’s imminent arrival, Gers fans will be hoping that the Liverpool icon can finally end their seven-year wait for a major trophy and get the Ibrox giants back to the top of the Scottish Premiership. Although Martin’s loan deal is up and he’s headed back to Norwich, stranger things have happened than possibility of the defender making a return to Ibrox if the Light Blues can’t get other defensive targets secured ahead of the start of the new season in July. It’s a massive long-shot but with the Gers desperate for defenders, it would be crazy to rule anything out.
