Harry Redknapp urges Daniel Levy to secure future of Tottenham star after speculation
By Danny Wright
Harry Redknapp has called on Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to offer Harry Kane a fresh contract that is befitting of a player of his quality after hitting a purple patch of form.
Kane, 24, has got everybody talking recently after firing 11 goals for Spurs in September, with seven of them coming in his last three outings against West Ham, APOEL Nicosia and Huddersfield.
Gareth Southgate has also confirmed that he will hand the striker the England captaincy for Thursday night’s crucial World Cup qualifier clash at Wembley, which could see the Three Lions secure their place at next summer’s competition in Russia with a win.
With such good form, it won’t be too long before speculation that the financial elite of world football would become interested in Kane and Spanish news outlet Don Balon has reported that Real Madrid are plotting a £177milliion move for the striker next summer.
The Gambling Times has now recently claimed that Spurs are open to the idea of handing the forward a new contract in the wake of interest from Madrid, and ex-White Hart Lane boss Redknapp has suggested that Levy listens to whatever Kane needs to secure his future.
“No one could dislike Harry Kane. He is a model professional. I was lucky enough to manage him as a young player and he is different class,” said Redknapp to the Alan Brazil Sport’s Breakfast show on TalkSport, as quoted on the broadcaster’s official website on Thursday.
“He wouldn’t be a boy thinking he wants £200,000 or £300,000-a-week. He is happy at Spurs. They love him. He will end up as captain, I’m sure. It is a great club to be at.
“Daniel [Levy, the chairman] needs to look after him and make sure his contract is up there with a player of his stature deserves and I’m sure he will. But I wouldn’t see him wanting to bang the door down and leave Tottenham in a hurry.”
Kane is no doubt a star of this Tottenham side and 100 per cent deserves a new deal despite only signing fresh terms 10 months ago.
However Spurs and Levy cannot risk the striker’s head being turned by the lure of Madrid, much like Gareth Bale and Luka Modric have done in the past.
