Harvey Elliott and teammate ‘under ‘pressure after Liverpool source’s £59m reveal

Noel Whelan has insisted the potential signing of Ajax star Antony would “pile more pressure” on young Liverpool duo Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Reds would be “silly” not to further strengthen their attack by signing the 22-year-old winger – if he is available this summer.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (19 July) that Liverpool have enquired about signing Ajax sensation Antony – who is valued at £59million by the Dutch giants.

Man United have also been linked with a potential swoop for the Brazil international – who netted 12 goals in 32 games last term.

The Merseysiders have already added Carvalho, 19, from Fulham this summer, while Elliott, 19, made his Liverpool breakthrough last season.

Whelan insisted a move for Antony wouldn’t “block the pathway” for the young duo as Jurgen Klopp’s side gear up for another quadruple chase.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Clubs like Liverpool can’t stand still.

“They don’t buy players just for the sake of it. Klopp will be looking at certain players to strengthen his side even more.

“I don’t think it will block the pathway for the likes of Carvalho and Elliott. If anything it just piles even more pressure on them to succeed and deliver in a Liverpool shirt.

Liverpool

“You want the best players in the world, and right now Antony is wanted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

“It’s squad depth. If a player like him is available, and Liverpool have got the funds – they’d be silly not to add him.”
