‘Has to be in you’ – Rangers youngster opens up on Ibrox expectations after trophy win

Rangers Under-17s captain Danny Finlayson has admitted it was “nice” to win the City of Glasgow Cup over Celtic fofr the first time in four years – and insisted that winning trophies is “what you have to do” at the Ibrox giants.

The Light Blues youngsters romped to a 3-0 win at Firhill earlier this month as they lifted the trophy and the Scottish youth international thinks it was a “great experience” for him and his team-mates to lift the trophy.

Finlayson also claimed that the “pressure and expectation” is “different” at Rangers compared to other clubs and is something that is “built in” to players at the club.

“It was a great experience for us all to win the Cup against our biggest rivals and it is something that we haven’t done in a while,” Finlayson said, as quoted by the Evening Times.

“I think it has been four years since we have won it so it was nice to pick up the trophy again and take it back to where it belongs.

“Of course it is about development, that is why we are at the Academy, and the help and support we get from the coaches and the staff is excellent.

“But if you play for Rangers you need to be lifting trophies and winning leagues so hopefully that is what we can do.

“It is different when you are playing for Rangers, there is that pressure and expectation on you to do well, to be successful and to win and that is built into us. That is what you have to do at Rangers, that has to be in you.”

Football Insider verdict:

Finalyson has won rave reviews for his performances in the Under-17s this season as the Light Blues enjoyed a good season in the league and cup. It is telling that the expectation at Ibrox is “built in” to the players even at such a young age and shows the difference between the Old Firm and so many other clubs. While Finlayson is still a bit away from the first-team. he is another example of the fine work bing done by the coaching staff at Auchenhowie as they club put a real focus on bringing through their own homegrown talent alongside the likes of Ross McCrorie, Jamie Barjonas and others. Finlayson will likely find himself stepping up into the revamped reserve set up next term as the SPFL and SFA push ahead with their ‘Project Brave’ plan and take steps to try to improve youth development and attainment across Scottish football.
