Heckingbottom delivers verdict on speculation after report he is set to face Leeds axe

Paul Heckingbottom has addressed the speculation surrounding his job at Leeds by saying that it “came as a surprise”.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday that the manager was set to face the axe, with the only decision left to be made whether he would go immediately or at the end of the season.

Heckingbottom did address the news and, as well as saying it came as a surprise, he added that he had no reason to think that he wouldn’t be in charge at the start of next season.

His words were reported by Phil Hay from the Yorkshire Evening Post who was at his pre-match press conference, head of the Villa game on Friday night.

Football Insider verdict:

It looks like Heckingbottom is here for the time being – for the Aston Villa game at least, after he took the pre-match press conference. However, yet more injuries – this time to key defender Pontus Jansson – has stretched his squad extremely thin and he’ll have to rely on more youth platers against Villa. It’s a must-win game for the home side and they’re on a charge at the top of the Championship table. Heckingbottom must be really concerned that a thumping – and with a threadbare defence, it could be a bad beating – will hasten any decision that has been made by Andrea Radrizzani.
