‘He’d be Fantastic signing’ – Exclusive: Whelan Wowed by Sky’s Everton transfer update

Noel Whelan insists that Wigan Athletic defender Antonee Robinson would be a “fantastic signing” for Everton this summer.

The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the left-back could become an immediate favourite at Goodison Park after his performances in the Championship.

Sky Sports report that the Toffees have joined Premier League rivals Sheffield United, who are said to have had a £2million offer accepted by the Latics, and Fulham in the hunt for the 23-year-old.

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti is in the market for a new left-back this summer after veteran defender Leighton Baines hung up his boots at the end of last season.

Whelan believes Robinson could be the answer for the Toffees and admits he is surprised the Merseyside outfit have not already got him on board.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I like him, I’ve always liked him, fantastic player, very strong, got that energy, got that aggression, he’s exciting to watch going forward as well.

“He’s a fantastic defender that, you know, to be honest with you I’ve not seen too many wingers beat him for pace or strength.

“He’d be a fantastic signing, someone I’m sure the Everton fans would take straight to their hearts because of his work rate and the way he plays the game.

“He looks to me like a player that would fit in really well at Everton. I’m surprised that move hasn’t actually already happened.”

Robinson played 38 times in the Championship for Wigan last season but, due to the Latics entering administration, was unable to stop the club from being relegated.

A seven-cap USA international, the defender saw a move to Italian giants AC Milan collapse in January due to a heart problem detected in his medical.
