Hutton: Patterson ready to explode at Rangers after what I’ve just seen

Alan Hutton was blown away as Rangers defender Nathan Patterson made his competitive Scotland bow.

The former Gers player, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as Steve Clarke put Patterson in from the off against Moldova.

Patterson, 19, started as a right-wing back as Scotland won in World Cup qualifying last week.

However, Patterson was then sent home from the Scotland camp after picking up an injury and he looks set for a spell on the sidelines.

Hutton insists Scotland have been crying out for a player like Patterson and claimed the position in the national side is now his to lose.

“We all knew when he burst onto the scene that there was a star there,” Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“There was always going to be the opportunity for him to play for Scotland.

“They were crying out for a wing-back and when he’s got that opportunity he’s shone. You can just see the aggression in his play when he wins the ball back.

“I thought he turned in a brilliant performance the other night. It doesn’t matter who you are playing against, you can only beat who’s in front of you.

“He put down a marker to say he’s ready for the big stage.”

Patterson has only made two appearances for the Gers this season after bursting onto the scene last year.

He played the full 90 against Alashkert in the Europa League and against Dunfermline in the cup.
