‘It hurts me to say that’ – BT pundit delivers damning verdict on Arsenal after victory v Man United
By Matt Bullin
Former Arsenal striker and BT Sport pundit John Hartson has revealed he believes Arsene Wenger should leave his position at Arsenal this summer.
The Welshman also claimed the Gunners current squad is not good enough to win the league, because the other sides around them have more quality.
Arsene Wenger’s side earned a huge victory on Sunday afternoon as they beat Man United 2-0 at the Emirates.
Second-half goals from Granit Xhaka, and ex-United star Danny Welbeck proved to be the difference on the day as Arsenal closed the gap between the sides.
There is now just two points separating Arsenal in sixth, and United in fifth, and the former have a game in hand.
However a top-four finish is still unlikely for Wenger’s men, with only four games left to play.
Speaking on BT Sport 1’s PL tonight (Saturday, 9pm), Hartson said of Wenger: “I think he’s taken Arsenal as far as he can. I would like to see a change.
“It hurts me to say that, but I genuinely feel [the club] needs freshening up. [The club] needs another manager to come in and to be allowed to go spend the money that is there to make Arsenal that little bit stronger.
“I don’t feel this group of players are strong enough to win the league – I don’t think they’ve got a strong enough group as the other challengers have got more in terms of quality.”
Next up for Arsenal is a Wednesday night trip to St. Mary’s to face 10th-placed Southampton.
Hartson made 58 league and cup appearances for the Gunners, scoring 15 goals. But his best times came in Scotland, where he was a three-time Scottish Premiership winner with Celtic, as well as a two-time Scottish Cup winner.
