‘I’ll consider all options’ – Rangers loanee makes admission on his immediate future
Russell Martin has admitted that he only realised how big a club Rangers were when he joined the Light Blues on loan in January – and revealed that nothing can prepare you for joining the Ibrox giants.
Martin moved north from Norwich in January on a short-term deal as the Light Blues struggled to a third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership.
The 32-year-old is expected to return to Carrow Road when his loan officially ends on June 9th when the transfer window re-opens and admitted he will consider all of his option after falling out of favour at the Canaries.
“I think I’ll have to go somewhere else to play my football, so I’ll consider all options,” Martin said, as quoted by The Pink ‘Un.
“I don’t think anything can prepare you for it (Rangers).
“It’s huge. You’ve got an idea but it’s only when you go up there that you realise how big it is.
“Just walking around the streets, it’s a giant of a football club with a great fan base.”
Football Insider verdict:
Martin isn’t the first to be blown away by the size of the Ibrox giants and won’t be the last. Despite Scottish football often being considered the poor relative of England’s Premier League, there is often far more passion on display north of the border than can be found at games anywhere in England. With 50,000 fans at Ibrox every other Saturday, there’s a long list of players who came to Scotland not knowing much about the Light Blues and left absolutely wrapped up everything that surrounds the Ibrox giants. Steven Gerrard’s arrival at Ibrox will no doubt expose some more people to just how big a club the Gers are but for those who have been following the Light Blues for years then it isn’t a surprise just how passionate the Ibrox support is and how much they care about their club. We’re talking about a club that sold 35,000 season tickets in the bottom tier of the Scottish Leage while playing against literal painters, plumbers and postmen. It’s maybe a well-worn cliche but the Gers – and their bitter rivals Celtic – are much more than just a football club to their supporters.
