‘In the same bracket’ – Cup hero makes massive claim as Celtic make football history

Celtic cup final hero Callum McGregor believes that the current Hoops side who have just completed the ‘double treble’ deserve to be up there in the Hoops’ history alongside the Lisbon Lions.

McGregor, who opened the scoring in the 2-0 Scottish Cup win over Motherwell which saw the Hoops become the first team ever in Scotland to win the treble in back to back seasons, feels that the achievements made by the current group of players should go down in history.

“You hear the word legend and it’s all about the Lions at Celtic. People still talk about that team and what an achievement it was to win the European Cup in 1967” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Now to think you’ll be in the same bracket as them for guys like myself and Kieran Tierney – who grew up watching Celtic – is something special.”

McGegor capped another excellent season for the Bhoys with his superb half-volley in the cup final, which was his 12th goal of the season and put the Hoops on the path to football history.

Football Insider verdict

McGregor is correct to salute the achievements of the current Hoops side, but they still have a long way to go to match the achievements of the Lisbon Lions, and other successful teams in Celtic’s history. Whilst this team will no doubt go down in history as one of the best Hoops sides of all time statistically, they really need to do more in Europe to be considered as one of the top five teams in Hoops history. Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan were not as successful domestically as Brendan Rodgers has been, but they both achieved some memorable results in Europe, a feat which has mostly eluded Rodgers until now. Obviously the record books will show what an incredible achievement has been made in winning back to back trebles, but the Hoops will now need to show that they can do it in Europe, beginning next season in the Champions League.
