'An absolute honour' - Flying machine confirms imminent Celtic departure

Celtic winger Patrick Roberts has confirmed that he is set to leave Celtic and return to Manchester City at the end of the season after two loan spells in Glasgow.

The 21-year-old flying machine, who was an unused substitute in Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final win over Motherwell, took to his personal Twitter account to announce his departure from the Hoops.

“An unforgettable 2 and a half years spent at a very special club. The love and support you have shown me will stay with me forever, you have treated me like one of your own and for that I’m truly grateful! It’s been an absolute honour to wear the shirt! Thank you Celtic FC,” he wrote.

Roberts has for the most part been a huge success for the Hoops, but his game time was limited this season due to a hamstring injury which kept him out of action for around four months.

Football Insider verdict

It is no surprise that Roberts is set to leave the Hoops, for he will want to try and make a name for himself in England after winning every domestic trophy there is in Scotland. While there was panic from fans when it seemed that Roberts would not return to the club after his last loan spell, it is different this time as Roberts has been a bit-part player because of injuries and the form of James Forrest, who has comfortably replaced him in the Hoops side. That does not mean that Roberts isn’t a very good player though – his performance against Anderlecht in the Champions League showed that he has plenty of talent – he just has not featured enough this season for the Bhoys to be that influential on the side, in comparison to the game changing impact he had last season. He will still go with the best wishes of the club’s support though who will look on with a keen interest at his attempts to make it in England.
