‘Incredible’ Celtic backed to sign holding midfielder after what McAvennie has seen
Frank McAvennie has insisted Celtic need to sign a holding midfield player unless Aaron Mooy can fill that position this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Hoops striker said Ange Postecoglou’s side don’t need “many more” signings.
Mooy, 31, made his competitive debut for the Scottish champions in their league opener against Aberdeen.
The Australia international came on for the final ten minutes of the match after starting on the bench.
Speaking to Sky Sports (29 July), Postecoglou has anticipated the Bhoys have more business to do before the transfer deadline.
The manager added that although nothing is “set in stone”, there is potential to bring in other players.
Celtic have made seven signings this summer and Postecoglou said he is “pleased” with the position the club are in.
When asked where he thought Celtic needed to strengthen after watching the team, McAvennie told Football Insider: “We need a sitting midfield player and I hope Mooy is going to do that.
“I thought that would be James McCarthy’s job when he came, because we really need someone to sit in there.

“We’ve got so many players going forward it’s incredible. We saw it in the game, the speed at which they were going forward.
“I would like to see them bring in somebody that’s just going to sit there. If that’s what Mooy is going to do then fine. But I don’t think we need much more than that.“
